Growing a Better Future with NextSteps2!

On Wednesday 16th February 2022, NextSteps2 visited the Community Gardens in Kirriemuir with one of our young people to volunteer.

Located in a small field behind St Mary’s Church, the Kirriemuir Community Gardens are a part of the Sustainable Kirriemuir Project network.

One of our young people is very interested in working outdoors in a holistic environment and seeking landscaping, gardening/farming experience. The folks at the Community Gardens kindly welcomed us there and we were shown around the vegetable patches, herb garden, poly-tunnel and other small projects going on there.

It was a terribly rainy day so we were all soaked! Just after our small tour the clouds parted and we were able to help spread some wood chips over the entrance to the gardens. All volunteers are allowed to have some of what is grown there to take home, it was a really positive day and great to see this community effort. Our young person had a brilliant time and a great chat with the people there about different growing techniques, how to deal with pests, companion planting and organic growing. He is looking forward to the next visit!
