Building a Better Future for Bob

Bob got in touch with DEAP after a long spell of unemployment. He was looking to access training and support to get back into work. He was feeling low after losing his job and was feeling lonely and isolated, spending a lot of time at home on his own. Although Bob had relevant experience and had been labouring for many years, he did not hold any recognised qualifications. Many jobs advertised required a Green Labourers Card.

As Bob did not have a computer or internet access, staff supported him to apply for an individual training account (ITA) to complete his Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) training. With support from DEAP staff he also searched for jobs, produced a CV and practiced interview skills. He visited the DEAP office twice a week for training sessions and staff supported him to practice mock tests in preparation for his exams. The biggest challenge for Bob was developing his digital literacy skills to access online job searches, complete applications and the online tests for his CSCS.

Bob successfully sat and passed both the level 1 Award Health and Safety and CSCS Operatives test, enabling him to secure his Green Card. Acquiring the Green Labourers card reassures employers card holders have competent health and safety knowledge and entitles them to work on construction sites.

After completing his training Bob secured some temporary work, which led to a permanent job. He enjoys the company of working with others as part of a team and has made friends in his workplace. They have a darts team which he has joined and he enjoys the social events associated with being a member.
