Jahn, originally from Holland, came to Scotland for a fresh start. He had some experience of working as a labourer and was looking to secure work. Jahn got in touch with DEAP to seek support with his job search. Staff met with Jahn and highlighted to him he would be required to secure a Green Labourers Card to apply for jobs on UK sites. He also expressed he would like support to improve his English, to undertake the training and access work.
Staff supported Jahn to apply for an individual training account (ITA) to undertake his full CSCS course and card with DEAP. They also signposted him to ESOL classes available free of charge at the local high school and supported him to join the local library to access the internet and a Dutch to English dictionary.
Jahn worked conscientiously through his training sessions with DEAP successfully passing his Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment with the British Safety Council with a score of 90%, and his CSCS Operatives test with a score of 100%. Jahn was delighted with his test scores which demonstrated his commitment and diligence to his study. He feels the support he received has increased his confidence in conversing in English, and he now has the sector specific qualifications to match his experience, enabling him to apply for jobs.
