Peter McKay

Peter registered on the Steps to Success Project in May 2015 having been on ESA for the previous 8 years. Peter had suffered from severe depression and anxiety; however he failed his medical for ESA and therefore considered fit for work. Peter was told he would need to apply for JSA.
Peter was not ready for employment, but had no option other than to do the required job searching for Jobcentre Plus to avoid sanctions and the loss of his benefit entitlement. Peter was referred to DEAP for assistance with job searching. After a few months his depression became much worse because of the pressure he felt he was being put under to find work. Tom Hunter had a chat with Peter about the EF4 training programme and he decided to speak to his Work Coach at Jobcentre Plus for an eligibility check and referral.
Once in the programme Peter went on placement at Pie Bob’s Bakery within his first week and was delighted that he had gotten something so quickly. Peter progressed at Pie Bob’s and continued to enjoy the placement. After 3 months on placement Peter was offered a full-time position starting on Monday 19 October 2015.
Peter said he had been delighted with the support he had received from DEAP and in such a small space of time when no other organisation he had been with had been able to do this for him. Peter thanked us very much for getting him the job and said he would keep in touch.
